Jonathan Johnston (MA Ethnomusicology) listened to many short-wave stations growing up, including the Voice of Russia. It was from listening to those world stations, that his interest in travel and world music began. He joined the BDAA in 2007 while researching the history of Russian folk music in America. He has presented at various national/international academic conferences such as the Society for Ethnomusicology (Philadelphia), the American Musical Instrument Society (Williamsburg, VA), the International Council of Traditional Music (Shanghai, Astana), the International Musicological Society (Vilnius), and at BDAA conventions (Sitka, Madison). The formation of the WMRME is a dream come true. His favorite RME songs are "Evening of Roses," "Ochi Chornye," and "Kolomeika."
